“Your future is crystal clear, when (and only when) you create crystal clear Principle Targets™.” – Paul Finck

Are you crystal clear on where you are headed? When I say crystal clear, have you gotten specific about what your vision looks like?

Do you know exactly what your Principle Targets™ are which will get you to your vision?  Without having this written out in place you can view them constantly, the likelihood of you achieving them diminishes greatly.  Write them out and post them in at least one highly visible area for you.

Now there are 3 Key Traits to an effective Principle Targets™.  Do your Principle Targets™ have these:

  1. Are these Principle Targets™ specific?
  2. Do these Principle Targets™ have a deadline – a specific date when they you want to finish them?
  3. Are they quantified – have a measurable number attached to them?

Rewrite all of your Principle Targets™ to make sure all 3 Key Traits are present.

When you have completed the steps above in specific detail, you have created a crystal clear target for yourself to guide you. When your Principle Targets™ are this clear, the action steps to achieve them become much easier to lay out in a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily action plan. Keep this list of Principle Targets™ in front of you while you are adding Daily Action Items to your list for tomorrow.  When it is broken down to this point, all you have to do is follow the daily prioritized action items to reach the success you laid out in your vision.

This is why I say you have to reverse engineer your success starting from the endpoint – your crystal clear Principle Targets™.  If your Principle Targets™ are less than crystal clear, take the opportunity now to revise them. They will determine your future!

“Success is anything that gives you strength to work harder.” – M.H. Rakib

How do you measure success?

For some, it is reaching their goals they set out.

For others, they measure it by the activity they take toward their principle targets.

And for others, every day above ground is success.

We each have our own definition.

While I believe in creating and setting your longer term Principle Targets, this can sometimes take what feels like forever to achieve. And for some, this length of time becomes challenging since they are unable to celebrate until some time down the road. What happens if you never reach the goal? Are you still successful?

I like to measure the activities taken to reach the goal as success. This allows you the opportunity to celebrate more often which is part of keeping you motivated. You feel like taking the next step when you have just succeeded in the previous one, right? This is all part of creating momentum in your life. By celebrating the actions, you will be successful each time you move forward with the next step.

Another reason is the actions are the part of the success equation you have more direct control over. You decide if you are going to take your next action in your success plan.

In the overall larger goal, often there can be outside challenges beyond your control which pop up. These could hold you from ever being able to classify the goal as a success. By taking consistent action toward your goal, you might even find out you want to change the goal entirely. This is itself still a success, yet it would never be celebrated if you only measure against your initial goal.

Break your Principle Targets down into Daily Individualized Action Steps. These become your mini-goals. Each time you accomplish one, recognize it in some form. This recognition will create and support your success mindset. Reinforcing your actions and your mindset helps you move forward more effectively. The more consistently you do this, the more successful you will become.

“The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.” – Cecil B. DeMille

Are you dedicated to your principle targets?

Do you stay focused on them until you reach your goals or do you get sidetracked by something else?

Many of the students I work with come to me because they tend to get sidetracked in one way or another.  This happens when they see a new opportunity, a new program to help them, their job, their relationships, etc.  The list can go on and on for many.  I call this being shiny-balled.  When the shiny ball pops up, it distracts you from the goal you had previously set.

Ever happened to you?  I know it has happened to me.

Here are a few of tips on how to keep you on the steady path toward your goal:

  • Post your principle targets (goals) in in at least one very visible spot for you to see as you go through your day.  This could be on a white board in your office, on your screen saver on your computer, a printed copy on your mirror to look at every morning, etc.
  • Continually ask yourself throughout the day is the action you are taking now moving you closer to or further away from your principle targets.
  • Use a calendar to schedule blocks of time for specific action steps which are focused on your goals to occur in your day.
  • Have an accountability system set in place to keep you on track.  If you are in one of our coaching programs, this is built into the program when you use the tools and resources available to you.
  • Scream your goals from the rooftops.  Tell everyone you know what your goals are and when you will accomplish them.  This enrolls others to help you along your path.

Take these tips and use them consistently to aim unswervingly at your principle targets.  You success is achieved through the dedication to do whatever it takes to stay on track to reach your goals.  Are you ready to implement your whatever it takes attitude?
