“Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” – Mario Andretti

Are you committed to excellence in your life every day in every way?  Truly a big question when you think about it.

Do you give level 10 commitment to everything you do?

Many have goals or Principle Targets they have created for themselves.  Whether it’s I want to lose 20 pounds, get a 6-pack stomach vs a keg belly, make a 6-figure income this year, find my soulmate, or reconnect my relationships, the true drivers come in after the Principle Target is set.

You have to start with a strong motivation or why you are going to make changes in your life to create a different result.  If this is weak or meaningless to you, most will never even get off the couch to get started.  Make sure you feel emotion when you speak of your why.  When you can feel it deep inside, it will help motivate and drive you.

The second portion of achieving your success comes from your determination and commitment.  Each Principle Target will encounter it’s own challenges on the path to achievement.

How strongly are you committed to attaining your goal?  Will you do Whatever It Takes?

How will you react when a seemingly huge obstacle pops up in front of you?  Will you find a solution or let it hold you up and stop you?

Reflecting on these questions will let you know what else you might need to reach your Principle Targets.  Many times, people are missing at least one of these 3 key ingredients to allow their success cake to rise to the heights it is capable.  Find the missing ingredient or find an expert who is easily able to see what ingredient is needed to get your success cake to rise.

“Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, “Make me feel important.” Not only will you succeed in sales, you will succeed in life.” – Mary Kay Ash

Do you approach everybody with this type of attitude?

Do you ask about them to get to know them?

Do you find out what they need in their life at this moment?

When you ask questions of everyone you meet to truly find out about them, you are able to find ways to help each other.  They literally will show you how to work with them in one way or another.  Every person wants to feel like they are important which you show by listening and looking for ways to help.

The big secret here is to do this without having an agenda of what you are looking to do with them.  People can see and feel that coming.  Just be in the moment with them conversing and truly looking for ways to help them out.  Be of service to them and watch what emerges from your interactions.

Now outside of the doing this with the new people you meet, think of ways to do the same with the people you already know.  How much deeper will this build your connections?  How much more will you bring into their lives and in turn, your life?

Time to make those who come into your life feel as important as they truly are.

“Take your victories, whatever they may be, cherish them, use them, but don’t settle for them.” – Mia Hamm

When you succeed, what do you do?

Do you take the time to celebrate?

Do you use this victory to propel you forward to your next one?

Or do you get comfortable, neglecting doing the action steps which brought you to this victory?

It’s a challenge I see happen with many of my students.  They reach a goal they had set for themselves – a sales volume they wanted, another house purchased, a weight release goal achieved – and then they get satisfied with where they are.

The challenge with being satisfied is it slows most people down from continuing to grow.  They unconsciously settle for where they are right now.

Now if you want to settle for one level of success, make this decision and be happy with it.  What I see happen is people relax when they achieve a goal and then realize a little while later they are unhappy with where they are and have to start the success train moving again.  It takes a lot more energy to get this train started from a stop than from just keeping the momentum of the previous victory going and building off of it.

To design the life of your dreams, make sure to stay hungry.  Celebrate your victories.  You deserve it.  Then look for the next principle target to focus your energy from your recent success to catapult you to the next victory.

Recently, I was speaking to one of my students who is at the beginning stages of putting together his course materials for a new goal-setting program he’d like to market. It was to include written course materials on setting goals, exercises to complete, as well as a DVD to reinforce the major points.  His passion was to provide an Accountability Program to the students after the exercises were completed.

This student has the affinity to lead others, but was already hitting a wall when it came to the organization of the written materials.  He wanted to know if it was an okay practice to borrow from some of the masters when it came to the teaching materials.

When is it okay to use somebody else’s material to start a new program of your own?

It truly is okay to borrow from an established program and adopt it as your own.  Many foundational pieces are very generic in their approach and therefore not protected by any kind of copyright laws. While using the material as a stepping stone you can fashion it with your personal take and create something new and distinctive as your brand.

If you haven’t personalized the actual material, a short-term buying option for students could be established as another option.   One could get a percentage from the sale of the original material until this material is adopted as your own.

Use the information as a foundation, and even more generic world-wide material, as you absorb this material into this portion of your own program.

For the quick option, utilize theirs to jump start your program right away. Then be certain to personalize the program for yourself since you will invariably have difference in the way you implement the information.

There are many examples of businesses becoming established in this way.

For instance, “Think and Grow Rich” is a profound book filled with ideas that have shaped the world.  It is now free material. The family of its author, Napoleon Hill, gave up the rights to it years ago.  Anyone can take that material and use it as their own without fear of copyright infringement.

Many people espouse the tenets of “Think and Grow Rich” and then do trainings around the lessons provided there. People get that book, adopt some of the components of it as their own, frame lessons around it and coach the principles found there. Seeing someone else’s generic material and using it as a foundation to move forward is perfectly acceptable. And truly, it’s done over and over and over again.

Follow this simple process:

  • Don’t reinvent the wheel
  • Utilize tried and true methods
  • Personalize the adopted material
  • Put your personal spin on the component most important to you

Anytime that you’re starting a business and there are already components of that business in operation that you can utilize as part of your company, use it. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Borrow and individualize the material from the people that already have components of that set. Utilize them and their services, their business, and their information as a stepping stone for you to get to your next level.

Taking it One Step Further

In addition, you can actually take your service and offer it to somebody else who has a different, but related, product as an up-sell for their clients.

For instance: a product is being sold, but the owners haven’t implemented a service component that could make a great supplement for that business. Your service component could be a wonderful extension of that product when offered to all of their students. Partner with them for this and every sale that is made from that company.

A lot of what I do is put together new programs for other speakers where  my coaching completes it. They may be speaking and marketing something about internet marketing, however they don’t have anything on sales development or personal development. When they don’t have anything connected on sales or personal development, I add my sales and personal development training into their program and we re-bundle it as one product to sell to their clients. This is an example of very effective joint venturing.

The most important thing is to get your program up and running.  Don’t worry about borrowing from the masters. To be authentic, you must adopt the principals and then personalize it with what you’re selling or the service you’re providing.

Be open to the opportunity to partner with someone selling a related product or program and bundle the two together as one great offering. In this way you are able to get your business started and build a substantial client base.

What gets you Pumped vs. What drags you Down

Motivators and De-Motivators

Before you can build a successful and sustaining business you need to realize some basic human qualities.

You must determine what are motivating factors for your life, for your business.  Ask yourself what:

  • gets me excited?
  • keeps moving me toward my goal?
  • makes me feel great about what I do?

One of the first things we need to know when we’re talking about taking action internally and personally is:  Who we areHow we operate.

Understanding ourselves is a huge step towards actually activating the right circumstances and the right components. What motivates you? What de-motivates you? Do you know?

What could be considered a huge motivator is distinctly different from person to person. It is unique and very personal.  Individuals are NOT all motivated by the same things.

Motivator = Unique and Personal

So, how do I get moving toward my principal target/goal?

If you’re taking action on your goals, you need to find a motivator that keeps you in process to continue to take action. Many find their motivator is in the form of a reward – at the end of their achievement level term.  The key is to find:

  • what Motivates you
  • a way to sustain that excitement and energy
  • a way to be accountable

What motivates you versus de-motivates you.”

It’s different for everyone.  Positive feedback: I love you, you’re doing a great job, you’re terrific, etc., can be motivating for some.  For others, it develops into complacency.  Instant de-motivation – along with the feeling that they’re already doing enough. Which is it for you?

Ask yourself:  If everything is going smoothly, everyone is happy, is it time to rest on your laurels?  Do you respond better to urgent situations? Or do you shut down by being overwhelmed?

Knowing yourself is the Crux of it: Neither is right or wrong – which is effective for you?

Once you determine what gets you moving toward your goal, how do you sustain that enthusiasm?

Different people get motivated by different things.

For instance, in my past career, the management used to have these sales competitions. I was in manufacturer distribution and the manufacturers would have different contests on a national level for whomever sold the most, or for the top 5 or 10 distributors of the product. The winners would get different rewards. Sometimes these were a gift certificate to a store. Sometimes they would be jewelry for somebody in your family or yourself. You could get a coat or some other grand gift. They also had competitions where you could win trips, really nice trips – Different trips depending on the promotions.

Now for me, my motivation has always been simply to care for my family. That was, and is, my singular motivation.

My wife, however, is highly motivated by trips. I would show her the different promotions. The promotions that offered up a jet ski, or a boat, or something on those lines. She would go, “Eh,”  – that wouldn’t excite her. I would show her diamonds and diamond necklace. It wouldn’t excite her. As soon as I would show her a brochure for a promotion that was talking about a trip, “I’m going there! You’re winning this!” Every time one of the manufacturers had a trip for a promotion – every time – I won it! The reason I won – my motivation – was my wife and taking care of her. Her motivation was the trip. I showed her the trip. She would make sure I stayed on task. Every Single Day!

Do you think I realized she was motivated by trips?

In the future, I would deliberately show her the promotions on trips because I knew it would excite her. As soon it excited her, I knew she would stay on me, and keep me accountable. Which is what I needed to stay motivated. I realized the motivating factor was to show her a trip, and then she would keep me motivated. She would keep me on task. When my wife asked me every single day, “How are sales of that product going?” That meant more to me and kept me more accountable than my boss or a manager or somebody of authority saying, “How are those sales going?”.

To a manager, I might say, “Leave me alone.” To my wife, I would be much more responsive to her inquiry.

This whole story has to do with the fact that I learned who I was, and figured out how to activate the best me possible.

Find what makes you accountable by keeping that motivator in the forefront of your mind. I knew I was motivated by accountability by my loved ones. I know that I am highly motivated with accountability, or a component of accountability which is, my “word is my bond”. This means when I tell the world that I’m going to do something, the likelihood of it getting done is off the charts. I create accountability from everyone I can think of around me telling me what my goal is, what my principal target is because then I could never not do what I said, or I would lose face. I would lose integrity. I’m motivated to do it – no matter what.

Milestones must be planned out goals that you can track every single week. When there is anything that you are not able to track every single week, it loses its power over you, and you won’t do it. You must have weekly accountability.

These are some of the techniques and strategies, when we know ourselves, we simply create a strategy in our life that activates one or more of our motivators.

You must take Full Inventory of yourself to determine the factors that are your personal motivators and de-motivators. Find what best gets you moving in the right direction in your personal life, and in your business, and implement those motivators into your every day life.  Find within yourself, what will best sustain this motivation in you until you reach your short or long term goals.

Remember to factor in accountability, whether it be to yourself, a loved one, your business, or to the world.  When you do these things you will create the magnitude you’ve always wanted in your life.

“I focus on what I want since I become what I focus on.” – Paul Finck

Who do you know who when you talk to them, their conversation and focus is about all of the challenges they have in their life?

What do they get more of in their life while focusing on these challenges – that’s right, more challenges.  Coincidence?

What do you focus on every day?

Is this focus what you want out of life – your Principle Targets or goals?

Do you keep you list of Daily Prioritized Action Items – your to-do list – in front of you throughout your day to guide your actions?

One of the ideas I incorporated early on in my life was knowing exactly what the intended destination was in my life.  This all starts for me by having my goals – my Principle Targets – written out and placed in a spot where I see them every day.  This is a constant reminder and reinforcement of where I want to be.

To reach these Principle Targets, I create my daily written to-do list – Daily Prioritized Action Items – the night before I go to bed.  These specific action steps for the day keep my focus on exactly what I want in my life.  Do you think it’s coincidence by using this kind of focus that I have achieved as much as I have in my life?

You are able to achieve the results you want for your life too.  Start by being aware of what you focus on since you know that is where you are going.  Make sure your focus is on your Principle Targets and your Daily Prioritized Action Items.  By doing this, you will control what your results will be.

Some people say I have attitude – maybe I do…but I think you have to. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does – that makes you a winner right there.” – Venus Williams

Do you have the success attitude?  It’s the one Venus is referring to in her quote.  The success attitude is the confidence in yourself to know you will create and succeed.  Is this your typical way of looking at and living your life?

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that you must be humble to succeed.  Look at what Donald Trump is accomplishing right now in the political arena.  Whether you agree with his opinions or not, he is leading the polls to become the Republican Presidential nominee.  A great part of this is due to his confidence.  He is willing to say and act on what most would never even consider.

His confidence is part of his appeal.  He has a strong opinion which is what many others lack.  Because of this strong opinion and passion for what he believes, others follow him.

This has been a shock to the U.S. media and many politicians who feel you must look to satisfy everyone and offend no one to be successful in this arena.  It’s actually refreshing to see someone passionately believe and express their thoughts – whether you agree with them or not.  Debate of thought is helpful for all willing to listen and learn.  If all of our leaders would do this, we would have the country we all want.

The important piece to remember is this kind of confidence creates the success both Venus and Donald have in their lives.  They have believed in themselves whenever no one else did.  Having a strong self-image carries you through challenging times when others stop or quit their journey.  This confidence creates the wins in your life through your dedication and perseverance.

The desire for unending confidence is one reason I recommend all my students do their Daily Dynamic Declarations.  These affirmations are intended to program you in a positive way to instill more confidence.  When was the last time you said yours out loud?

My recommendation, write out your Daily Dynamic Declarations.  Read them out loud at least twice each day.  One time when you wake up and are getting ready for your day.  This sets the perfect intention for what you want in your day.  The other definite time is right before you go to bed.  This programs your mind with the thoughts you want before going to sleep.  Your subconscious mind then gets to work on internalizing these declarations as you sleep.

As an added bonus to fast forward the creation of your dream life, pick multiple times throughout the day to say them out loud too.  Any time you want more confidence, read them out loud. Soon, you will have the confidence Venus talks about in her quote.

“More gold had been mined from the mind of men than the earth itself.” – Napolean Hill

How often do you mine your mind?  Most people are so involved in their daily life, they rarely take the time to pull out the ideas they have.

Years ago, I started taking time each day to write down at least one income producing idea each day in my journal.  I do this for a couple of different reasons.

The first is to create a fantastic list of ideas which I might bring into play in the future when the time is right.  Every few months, I will review the ideas I have thought of to see what fits with where I am at in my businesses.  It has been the starting point for many of my business pursuits.

The second reason I do this is because it exercises my creativity.  The more you use this muscle, the stronger it becomes.  If you are someone who tells yourself you are not creative, this daily practice is a building block to change your perceived weakness into a strength.

The more creative you are, the better you are able to solve challenges which occur in your daily life.  The more challenges you solve, the more value you bring to the world.  The more value your provide, the higher your compensation.  You do want more income in your life, right?

When you answer yes, how soon would you like it to start?  Start by mining the gold in your mind on a regular basis.  The payoff is outstanding!

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” – Mark Twain

Do you tend to agree with popular opinion or are do you typically have an alternate view of any topic?  You know my thoughts on choosing what to do when wondering about a decision.  Look at what the 95%ers are doing and do the exact opposite.

Why do I react this way?  The biggest reason is once an idea or way of doing things has become popular, all the upside in it is gone.

By 2007, real estate investing had become very popular.  There were multiple TV shows about flipping houses.  The media was featuring stories about the incredible housing market.  People were leveraging their homes with home equity lines of credit and loans.  People were spending very freely because their house was appreciating so quickly they would be fine to be able to pay these debts.  New homeowners were able to get into homes priced way above their means with interest only loans.

Well you know what happened through 2007 and 2008.  The whole dynamic changed.  The rush of people into real estate now became a huge challenge to the country.  There was the mortgage meltdown as it was termed.  The economy for many sank.  The foreclosure crisis hit.  Overall, the majority did very poorly.

During this downturn for the 95%ers, who was making money?  The people doing the exact opposite of what the majority was doing.  I know my economy started to take off at this time… and I’m not alone.  As the 95%ers fled real estate, I know multiple investors who made a great living and created generational wealth during this time.  Why was it different for us?

We know the real money and success happens in any opportunity before the masses identify the opportunity.  Successful entrepreneurs get in to ride the wave as its getting bigger.  Once it reaches a sizable height, we know it’s time to look for the next wave before the top of this one curls over on us.

Knowing this fact is why when you see the masses headed in a specific direction and you are with them, take a minute to analyze what’s going on.  Is the wave growing still or is the lip about come curl over on you and take you under?

Be aware of what the majority is doing.  Being aware of what the majority is doing is the reason the 5%ers continue to be the 5%ers.  They look for the opportunity where no one else is surfing yet to jump on the next big wave.  Start identifying where the majority is headed and begin searching for other options to create your next success.

“If you genuinely want something, don’t wait for it – teach yourself to be impatient.” – Gurbaksh Chahal

Are you impatient about getting what you want?  For probably the first time ever in your life, I will tell you being or creating this impatience is a good trait when used effectively.

Now typically, most of us have been told to be patient as we have grown up.  I know this was challenging for me at times.  I’m sure you heard the same types of sayings from your parents, family, and teachers.  ‘Patience is a virtue.’ or ‘Good things come to those who wait.’  Ever heard these before or even said these yourself to someone else?

This is just one more way your mindset can affect your results.  The programming you have received from others teaches you to wait to get the benefits you want.  It’s being programmed into us at an early age.  While this can serve another’s agenda in having you wait for a result without taking any action to make it happen, it definitely slows your results.

As an entrepreneur, teaching yourself to be impatient is a way to motivate yourself to take massive action NOW!  Just think for a minute.  When you have a deadline coming, does it move you faster to make sure the goal gets completed.  I know I work much better against a deadline.  It’s how I have always worked.  When I have a short deadline, my focus is increased.  I take more action steps in this smaller time frame to make sure I’m successful.  The larger number of action steps in a shorter time helps me reach my goals much quicker.

Now this can also work with your team.  I set aggressive deadlines with my team all the time.  When I create short timelines on projects, it drives them to finish sooner.  When we finish one task sooner, we are able to get to the next one earlier.  Since I use my impatience to set aggressive principle targets, myself and my companies get to more opportunities faster.  Getting to more opportunities adds to the overall success of my companies.

Do you want more results faster in your life?  Get impatient.  Take more actions now.  You have a great message, service or solution to help out the world.  The only thing you are doing by being patient is cheating them out of the opportunity to realize the benefits of what you offer.  Use your impatience to help drive your business.
