I wanted to let you in on some exciting news. I have a brand new website which launched this week. Make sure to take the opportunity to look around when you finish reading.

I have been discussing it with my team for a few months now about refreshing and updating the site. Well a few weeks ago, our website got a Trojan on the server which literally started eating pieces of the website. Talk about frustrating to see a portion of your marketing disappearing while we were promoting my Mindset Mastery Experience.

Everything happens for a reason and it serves you – even if you may not understand how it will serve you when it is happening. The challenge pushed the urgency to create the new website. With some long hours by my team and our web developer, we completed it late Tuesday night.

And now I’m so happy with what we have. It presents a much better image of what I actually do along with incorporating a lot more of the updated programs I offer. Make sure to check it out and let me know what you think.

What this challenge also brought to mind is the universe works in mysterious ways. I had put out the intent to update my website. I announced the intention to my team of making this a top project to focus on. After putting this out to my team, other projects took precedence over the site redesign.

Now because I put this update intention out already, the universe had already started moving to make it happen. When we left the idea idling on the sideline, the universe kept moving forward and created a way to make this happen still.

This demonstrates the power of setting a Principle Target and screaming it from the rooftops. The forward momentum by the universe is one reason I recommend for everyone to create and share their Principle Targets with as many people as possible. By having the goal written down and letting others know about it, the idea starts to move forward.

Another benefit of letting others know you intend to accomplish a goal, it also makes you accountable to make it happen. They will ask about it consistently. And the last impression anyone wants others to have is they are falling short on their word and commitments. Knowing this about yourself, use it to help move you forward.  Play every ace you have.  Others can serve as a huge motivation to move your actions along.  Invite them in to be a part of building your success.

As you can tell, I’m extremely happy the universe found another method to help me create this new website for all of you.  Enjoy the new features and check back for a lot more activity and training here.

Make sure to leave comments about what you think of the new design below in the comments!  I would love to hear from you.

Business. It’s everywhere. Take a look at the local shopping mall, or your downtown area. You will see business ventures from big corporations to franchises, to small entrepreneurs everywhere you look. Even the things we use for our day to day life are marked by business – From soap to water to clothes; the list goes on endlessly. All this means opportunity is everywhere as well. Almost every one of you has a dream of starting your own business. So here are a few tips I want to point out for aspiring entrepreneurs:

  1. Be creative. Find a business venture that has an unfilled, or under-filled demand. This can be a totally new business that you have encountered a demand for, or one which is currently being served in a less than desired way. Sometimes putting a new spin on an existing idea can be just as powerful as creating a whole new field. Unleash your creative skills.
  2. Choose a business which interests you, or even better, one you feel a passion for. You will invest a considerable amount of time in any new business so having one you love will keep you interested longer, and have you feel more fulfilled in the midst of long hours and late nights.
  3. Keep it simple. You don’t need to rent, or build a big building right away when you’re just starting out. Costs can kill your business early. Utilities, rent, and overhead will drain your resources, when you don’t have a strong client base yet.
  4. Tell your friends, family, and network about the business you’re starting. Get the word out as much as possible to all who may be interested or know someone who might be. Marketing is the key to getting any business up and running.
  5. Manage your resources wisely. Invest in what you truly need. Put your resources where they matter. The bells and whistles can come after the profits.
  6. Get feedback from the clients/customers. After all, it’s their opinion that counts. Being a small business, you can switch up your approach and handle any challenges quickly.

Here are few more things you will need when you start a business.

  • Guts. You have to be confident to sell your product to other people. And a thick skin to handle any rejection.
  • Money. Yes, you need money to start a business. This can be your money or even better, someone else’s money. Either way you will want to manage your funds well.
  • Location. It doesn’t matter if it’s your garage or your kitchen. As long as it’s presentable and gets the job done, it’s a place to start. After all, those multinational companies didn’t have a building of their own or boutiques when they started either.
  • Skill. It takes skill to run a business – From balancing your checkbook to managing your people. When you do not have a particular skill, find someone who does to handle it for you.
  • Perseverance. Got turned down first? No problem. You must give it another shot. A business wouldn’t flourish if you quit early. Happens to everyone. Look at Donald Trump – filed for bankruptcy and then he persevered and managed to get back on top.
  • And last but not the least, luck. You frequently hear, “I was there at the right place and the right time”. This comes from taking the first step and getting into action now. The more action you take, the luckier you will get!

The bottom line is anyone can run a business. Take a stroll on a busy street in a bustling city. You will see people who sell water, food, and flowers right on the street along with the many shops. Anyone can become an entrepreneur in any number of ways. You only need an idea and the willingness to act on it. The question is, will you?

You strive to be an effective leader. You are told you are to be perfect and be a role model for all around you. Then WHY do you make these mistakes?

Leadership is an art form. Even though some people are “born” leaders, it is an attribute that can be learned. To be a truly effective leader, sometimes it is more important to know what not to do than what to do. Clean up these common challenge areas, and you will be stepping into true leadership position.

Successful Leaders do not make the following mistakes:

1. Get “Power Hungry”

Do you know a “leader” who abuse their position and their power. Someone whom says and does crazy things that you know they do just because they can?

This behavior eats away at their authority and their personal connection with their team and organization. Over time people will come to resent this behavior and do whatever they can to tear this person down instead of working to build them up.

When you’re one of these types, learn to eliminate your “EGO” or at least check it at the door. Build teams, NOT dictatorships.

2. Can’t or Won’t Delegate Responsibility

Have you seen people in position to create amazing things and yet get stuck because they must do everything themselves. I used to be that person and it held me back for decades.

And even when they do let go they do it in a demotivating way. ”I empower you. But you must check with me before you do anything substantial.” In this way, they never really give up the power and thus handcuff their people in the process. Do this consistently, and your team will be as de-motivated as they come.

Have faith and confidence in your people. Allow them to do their job and even make mistakes. That’s how they will learn and empower the whole company.

3. Lack of Industry/Product Knowledge

Nothing is scarier than when a person in authority (maybe a sales rep or technical person) is speaking with a customer and they don’t know what they are talking about!

What happens when that person is a leader of a whole team or division? Poor results, or worse total collapse of the company all the way around.

Be an expert in your field and spend whatever time is necessary to master your products, services and industry that you’re involved in.

4. Unwilling to Lead By Example

“Do as I say – not as I do.” That statement is not good enough and never was! To be a great leader, you must be willing to get your hands dirty and show your people how it’s done.

I stepped up my game when I became a dad, and realized my children were watching me for subtle clues as to how they are to behave. It takes the idea of role model to a whole new level. Say what you are going to do. And do what you say. That’s what true leaders do.

5. Unwilling to Adapt to Change

Sorry folks. Change is inevitable. It will always be there and it will always happen. More importantly, it is the societies, companies, and individuals that learn to empress change, and change regularly that survive. The rest will perish.

You must be willing to accept that things will always change, and you must be willing to make the best of it. When you can do that, and do it with integrity and a positive frame of mind, you are on your way to becoming a top-notch leader.

6. Won’t Accept Others’ Ideas

The next step of learning to accept help is to accept ideas as well. You must be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. It is through this collaboration that innovation and breakthroughs happen.

When you are stuck on it being “your way or the highway”, you are doomed to failure. The willingness to hear, accept, and use others ideas entirely or integrate their ideas into your own, is one of the guiding principles of true leaders.

Start listening to the ones around you with an OPEN MIND, and success is sure to follow.

7. Blaming Others

The blame game. Finding fault. Pointing fingers at others. This is an entire subject all it’s own.

When you desire to be a great leader you must learn to be the living breathing personification of “The buck stops here!” You must take 100% personal responsibility for all you do.

To be a true leader is to be fallible; to be imperfect. “Sorry, I made a mistake and it won’t happen again.” is one of the most empowering phases you can learn as a true leader. People hear this so seldom they will not only take note, they may even be moved to do even more for you because of your honesty, integrity, and obvious exhibition of leadership qualities.

8. Selfish, Anti-Team behavior

The power of the organization is the power of its team. You are as weak as your weakest link… not your strongest. To be a true leader show understanding of these principles by watching out for ALL your team members. Always have their back. Always look out for their best interest.

They will notice and in turn, watch yours. When this happens throughout a team (because the leader showed the way), the strength and power of the team is unstoppable.

9. Share the Credit

All to often you hear people in authority act as if they are the sole reason something was invented, thought of, or done a certain way. This is never the case. Success always comes from a collaborative effort and as a true leader it is your job to make sure the credit is shared to that end.

To be the ultimate leader, don’t simply share the credit… give all the credit. When you do, your strengthen the organization and build you all to new heights.

10. Surround yourself with the best

Tom Osborne, the tremendously successful former head coach of the University of Nebraska football team, once said that his key to success was surrounding himself with good people and allowing them to do their job.

To be an awesome leader and to achieve ultimate success as such, you must surround yourself with the best. People who are better than you even.

Now for too many this is a challenge because it means letting go of your ego, letting go of your need to get all the credit, letting go of your desire to be right. It means living and breathing as a leader daily.

You must have the confidence in the people around you to let them do their job, let them have the power to make mistakes, and the power to correct them, and know when to step in and when to step out. Know they are the best and that is why they follow you.

Live these lessons and watch your organization grow. Live these lessons and be proud of the leader you have become.

Happy New Year!

The holidays were great. I had some wonderful family time. I got a chance to unwind, relax, and reflect on the year (and years) past.

NOW it is time to plan for the future! What am I going to do with this fresh new year?

It is a funny thing that happens when we start a new calendar year. It is like getting a new pair of shoes, a new shirt, or a new car. We are so proud of it. We admire it. Hold it up to the light to really see it for all it is. We may give it that extra love and care, spending a few extra moments with just it. We proclaim how much it means to us. We even dedicate that with this new ____ (pair of shoes, shirt, car, new year, fill in the blank), we will treat it differently than any other we have ever had. We will care for it, cherish it, and protect it. We will make sure it never gets like the others.

We commit to being different!

AND… we are… for a time.

Sometimes that time is a day,… a week,… a month,… And then it happens – Days will go by and your “life happens”. You will lose track of the time. You will lose your focus. The ____ (pair of shoes, shirt, car, new year, fill in the blank) lose their attraction. The old excuses begin to set in. Your story you have told yourself over and over again in years past begins it methodical melody in your head which soothes you back to…

Doing exactly what you always have done…

Creating the results you have always gotten!

OR…

You can decide to do things differently.

You can decide to commit even more profoundly. You can decide that this is the year you BREAK The CHAINS that have bound you for years (for some decades). You can decide to bring in the resources, tools, people needed to finally reach a new height in your life on the ongoing journey to your ultimate potential.

DECIDE

What is it going to take? What new resources do you need? What new tools are necessary? What people do you want by your side? What is it going to take to make this year the best year ever? What is it going to take to really make the magic happen?

Take the time to create this list for your first step to create a new year for yourself… and even more importantly, a new life from here on out!

Life is all managing shifts. Shift from one stage in life to another; Shift from one year to the next; Shift from one season to another; Shift from one day to the next; Shift from one project to another; And even shift from one part of your day to the next. When you manage these shifts smoothly you are able to accomplish so much more and live up to your fullest potential.

The reality is many people find these shifts challenging… even when it is simply getting past that afternoon slump. Maybe it is the extra carbs you eat, low sugar intake, or other things. The key is get your blood moving, and get your mind and energy motivated.

Here are 8 simple tips to overcome your afternoon slump – or whatever shift is challenging you:

1. Eat smart. For lunch, enjoy smoothies, fruit, water, nuts, proteins vs. carbs. Eat lite instead of a heavy meal that you will need to digest.

2. Do the hardest project or chore of the day first. When you eat your “frog” in the am, rather than having the hardest thing to do in the afternoon, you will have other less difficult things to work on.

3. Create afternoon routines. For example, after lunch, do a five minute power walk outside, then 10 jumping jacks, go to the bathroom, put cold water on your face, get a big glass of ice water, come into your office, clear your desk, do a brain dump of all morning to-do’s, turn on the lights/music, open a window and start working! Routines help our brains connect with what we want to do. Once you develop habits, your brain will automatically shift gears at all the right times.

4. Engage your body. Do things that get your body moving and that are “easy”. Stand up, sit on a balance ball vs. chair, do things that keep your blood and body moving. Stay engaged with movement, and let the momentum of movement keep you alert.

5. Give your brain a break. Save the more mindless and active tasks for the afternoon. i.e. errands, phone calls, filing, straightening, sorting, etc. When you are wanting to concentrate, looking at the computer, reading, listening, etc. you are working against your energy and have to work to think and focus.

6. Change the scenery. When you can, move to a different room. Do things to get extra lighting, or air. Sit in a place that is suitable not cozy. Perhaps a natural environment to keep you from getting distracted when your mind is already wondering. Turn on some upbeat music. Let your environment keep you on your toes.

7. Play a game. Give yourself a goal, or game to play. When you get this project done, or so many calls made, etc. you can reward yourself with going home early, stopping for a treat on the way home, etc. Introduce some momentum and urgency to the picture to counteract the slowing force of your energy.

8. Lastly, don’t fight it. When nothing else is working, take the 10 minute power nap or a 10 minute mediation time (set a timer). This will allow you to 100% rest and then focus and re-engage in high productivity. When you keep fighting it, you will have a long period of low productivity.

Track your energy and look for the patterns of what works,… and what slows you down. Find the things that support you to be the most productive and attentive; to do different things. When you find things that work, make it a habit. For ongoing success, stay focused, motivated and whatever you do; do something! AND manage your shifts effectively forever.

It is well known that Thomas Edison was one of the greatest inventors from American History. He invented over 2000 inventions in his lifetime. What most people don’t know is that Edison didn’t actually create all those inventions himself. He created a team of people who worked for him. They did the hands on work. You see, he gave his team members the freedom to work to the fullest potential of their abilities so that they could make major contributions to the team. It was the team members of Edison that accomplished a majority of the tough and complicated experiments. Edison played the role as a team leader and operated his team well. And reaped the rewards!

There is no doubt that Edison was a great scientist. However, what was it that enabled him to become one of the most famous scientists of all time?… He created himself as an excellent team leader.

To create abundant success, it takes more than any one person can create on their own. Especially with the development of information, computerization, and the global economy, the need for quality team play is becoming more and more important and significant. As a consequence, you MUST learn to be a quality team leader when you want to create success.

What is your role as a quality team leader?

1. Create an environment of enthusiasm and initiative for your members.
2. Give them the authority and freedom to work to their fullest potential

The “HOW” is the more elusive part.

CREATE A VISION

The first and most important step that I see most people miss is you want to create a vision. Not just any vision. A vision that is large enough for everyone to buy into – a vision large enough for everyone to be able to be a part of it. You want to create a vision that everyone can see themselves as part of it sometime in the future.

SHARE YOUR VISION

Then you must share it. Share it with your team. Bring everyone together and paint them a picture of the future of the company, and their part in it. Then, have individual meetings with each and share the vision again with each. Lay out to them where they fit in the big picture.

“Great”. “I have done that – Now what?”

REPEAT

Do it over, and over, and over again. Every time you talk to your team you must share the vision. Every time you email them, or send out a company communication, you want to remind them of the vision. Make it a part of the company community. Make it a part of who they are.

This is how to create yourself as a leader. This is how to create yourself as a great team leader. Use these techniques to create the foundation to all you want, and you will find that wealth and success is waiting right around the corner for you.
