“If you look at what you have in life, you’ll always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you’ll never have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey

How do you look at your life?  For many I meet, they are focused only on what they don’t have in their life.  Do you know anyone like this?

Often this has to do with your principle targets.  If you are still taking action to achieve them, you will have focus on what still needs to happen.  This is a good use of motivating yourself to reach a new level in your life.

The challenge is when this is your only focus, you will always continue to chase the next achievement in your life.  You will feel like you never have enough.  This can be very hard for many and eventually lead to burnout and frustration.

One of the actions I take every day to prevent this from happening is to journal.  In my journal, I recognize my successes and what I have received from them.  This is a great exercise to keep you motivated while reinforcing all the positive results in your life which are often overlooked by most.

My journal is a place where I can go back and review my entries when I am having a challenging day.  Reviewing these entries and seeing all the great successes is a boost when I want it.  It changes my perspective and helps get me back on track with my mindset.  Feeding my abundant mindset is what keeps me excited and motivated to accomplish even more.

Are you ready to feed your abundant mindset to create more?  When you are ready, start journaling daily.  Include your successes from each day.  Write down what you are thankful for from the past 24 hours.  Add in how it makes you feel when you think of these items.  This journal will serve you well to recognize all you have already in your life.  You will be amazed at how much more it leads to in your future.

WOW – I guess I am a “Maverick” – the response to the question I asked through social media has been amazing both online and off line.

People from my personal life and my professional world have all come back with the same response – “absolutely” ~ “no question” ~ “you always have been” ~ “no kidding you are a Maverick, you have bucked the system your whole life”.

I think back over my 30 year career and realize that is the one word that would define it all … from the very beginning! My first job out of college was a salaried position with a small bonus for sales completed… I quit after 7 weeks to go to the competition who paid straight commission!

With that position, I grew fast and within 6 months had my best friend working for me.  I figured out my strengths and, more importantly, my weaknesses!

I was good at opening new accounts and yet had challenges with follow through.  Instead of beating myself up or looking to spend time changing so I could grow to mediocre in the follow through department, I brought in someone who was GREAT at follow through.  What a great experience we had building it up as a team… which just was NOT done by any of my peers.

Then – the company I was working for was forced out of business (by the Feds ~ longer tale for another day).  Instead of ignoring the obvious or crying over the loss of a job or position like most of my co-workers, I saw an opportunity.

Within 2 weeks had my first major company launched.  Because I took action (a Maverick move compared to the actions taken by all around me), the TOP salespeople all came to work for me. Remember these were senior, straight commission salespeople and I was a 22 year old playing CEO for the first time.  In 6 months, we did over $500,000 in gross sales.

Over the years, I have owned more businesses that I can remember; Stepped up when others didn’t; Took action while others watched; Took the road less traveled; Dared to test out a theory and take the BOLD move; and simply learned to dance to my own beat.

Thirty years now with a Serial Entrepreneurial life… and lifestyle;

30 years of being told to get a real job;

30 years of people saying “that isn’t going to work”;

30 years of people commenting on my behavior and not quite getting what I was up to;

30 years of consistently taking “risks” they wouldn’t take;

30 years of bucking the status quo.

SO I am a Maverick! What has it gotten me…

A life long career of experience that has given me a long, varied and impressive resume.

Freedom to work out of my house for decades and Time to enjoy my family.

Financial Power … now this is different from Financial Freedom I hear so many wish for.  Financial Power is active and passive income that is produced on your terms with NO “strings” to tie you in knots.  Financial Power truly enables me to do what I want, when I want, and how I want… I have created Financial Power now and for the rest of my life.

SO I am a Maverick!  Who wants to be a Maverick with me???

And this gives me an idea.  Stay tuned.  I know you are going to love what’s coming next…

“The best reason to start an organization is to make meaning; to create a product or service to make the world a better place.” – Guy Kawasaki

Are you creating meaning with your business?

Is it making the world a better place?

These are fantastic questions to ask yourself about your business… and often are overlooked when people start a business.  Did you answer these questions before you started your business?

So many entrepreneurs I have met started their business for one reason – to make money.  While revenue is important to be able to create the freedom and lifestyle you dream about, it should never be the main reason for your business.

Look at the successful companies and you will find a deep passion among the owners who started them.  Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Warren Buffett, Dale Carnegie, Henry Ford, Walt Disney.  They all created extremely successful companies which make tons of money.  What started them and carried them on this course to success was a desire to make the world a better place with their products.

If they had only been concerned with the money, they would never have persevered when times were challenging.  If they had only focused on the money, they would have never looked at what the customer’s needs were and are.

What many entrepreneurs fail to realize is when you take care of your customer’s challenges with your solution of a quality product or service, they will be happy.  Happy customers tell others about your products because they know it will work for their friends.  Referrals are the easiest business to close since someone else has already vouched for your company.

Happy customers and referrals come from delivering a fantastic product with amazing service from a person or a company who is passionate about helping them resolve a challenge they have.  When you become this type of company focused on making the world a better place, the money will follow.

Take the time now to figure out what your customers need and want.  Focus on delivering the best product and the most fantastic service to create an amazing experience for them.  When you impact their world in a such a positive way, it will affect your world, and your bank account, in a positive way!

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” – Steve Jobs

Are you crazy enough to change the world?  This is one area I can resoundingly answer “Yes!!” without hesitation.

Being an entrepreneur is already a step in that direction.  You already think differently and are ready to act differently than the masses.  There are people who would already tell you that you are crazy for even just being this.

I love working with those who want to do something different which has never been done before.  Creating those huge visions and then figuring out how to make them happen is pure enjoyment for me.  One of my principle targets is to be the first entrepreneur on the moon.  Think that’s crazy?  Even if you do, I’m good with that.

It’s the crazy ideas which change the world.

Christopher Columbus saying the world was round and being willing to prove it by sailing off what many thought was the edge of the earth to discover new lands.

Thomas Edison working endlessly to create an electric light bulb to bring a safer and more effective form of indoor lighting into use.

Alexander Graham Bell wanting to invent a way you could talk to someone without being in the same room as them.

Henry Ford creating and embracing the assembly line system to make automobiles affordable for the masses.

Steve Jobs knowing the power of creating a personal computer which everyone would want to have in their home.

All were called crazy at one point in their lives.  Did they change the world as everyone at those times knew it?  Yes.

I reframed being called crazy as a good thing.  It means I am on to something if it is such a stretch for most to think it is even possible for that idea to happen.  It also motivates me to create just that ‘crazy’ vision.

When you have a vision outside of what most believe is possible, embrace it, nurture it, work on it.  Keep in mind, most great ideas were only a crazy dream at one point… and one day you too may be viewed as a genius!

“Massive Action equals Massive Results. What Massive action have you taken today?” – Paul Finck

What kind of results are you looking for in your life?  Are your actions on the same scale as these principle targets?

This is one area which many newer entrepreneurs have a challenging time realizing.  I speak to many who want to start earning $10,000, $20,000 or even $100,000 each month.  It’s the goal they have decided on for themselves.

Then when I ask what they are doing to create this, they tell me making a couple calls each day to prospective leads or mailing out 50 marketing pieces this week or making 2-3 offers this week.  While these actions are all fine depending on your goals and your time frame to achieve them, when you are looking to create massive results, the type and amount of actions taken have to be in proportion to the goals.

You realize there is a difference between the amount and type of action it takes to add an additional 10% to your income each month than it would take to double or triple your monthly income, right?  Massive results require massive actions to attain them.

When you are looking to achieve massive different results in your life – especially when you have never achieved these results before – your action steps have to be congruent.  You want to do as much as you think you can… and then a little bit more.   Heck, who are we kidding… do a LOT more!  It’s how the ultra-successful do it.  We create massive goals many times larger than the results we eventually get and take massive amount of action steps to reach them.

Are you willing to take massive action to achieve your massive results?  It will mean sacrificing many if not all of the actions you do now which are not focused on stepping toward your results.  Will you make sacrifices today to take the massive action to achieve your dream life tomorrow?  It’s the only way to achieve massive results.  You decide.

When a man has put a limit on what he will do, he has put a limit on what he can do.” – Charles Schwab

Are you willing to do whatever it takes to be successful?  If you have attended my Mindset Mastery Experience, you have experienced what I mean when I say Whatever It Takes with the exercise we do.  And as always I say as long as it’s moral, legal and ethical.

Many people say yes to this without thinking of the true meaning.

  • Are you willing to skip your children or your spouse’s birthdays and anniversaries?
  • Will you get up early and stay up late creating a new life for yourself and your family?
  • Will you drop TV from your life?
  • Will you make the cold calls to find new leads?
  • Will you skip vacation to attend a training event to further your goals?
  • Will you stay in to work on moving your business forward while all your friends and family are out having a good time?
  • Will you ask others for money or other resources you need to succeed?
  • Will you make one more sales call every day?
  • Will you reduce your sleep time?
  • Will you listen to others who have succeeded already and do whatever they tell you to do without questioning why or if it’s a good idea?

If you answered ‘no’ to any of those questions, you are putting a limit on what you will accomplish.   In fact, if you answered “yes, but…” to any of them you are limiting your results.  When I ask, “Are you willing to do whatever it takes?”, there is no comma at the end when you respond.  Only a period when you say yes.  If you add the comma, you are limiting yourself.  When you limit yourself, you are unable to realize the true, full potential of what you are creating.

Successful entrepreneurs are willing to do whatever it takes when they are working toward their goals.   This dedication shows your passion for achieving your result.  This ability is what will draw others to you and your goal and is the trait of a leader.  Leaders attract others willing to do put forth the same effort.  This creates additional leverage to reach your goals faster.  Like I always say, when you paint a large enough vision and act accordingly, others will line up to help you get there faster.

Many people have great ideas and big dreams for the future.  What will separate the wanna-be’s from the successful is their desire to take any action necessary to create the result they want without the comma.  Are you a success or a wanne-be?  Will you do whatever it takes from this day forward to remove the limits on your success?

Tell me in the comments below what your whatever it takes is to create your dreams.

“Before the fruits of prosperity can come, the storms of life need to first bring the required rains of testing, which mixes with the seeds of wisdom to produce a mature harvest.” – Lincoln Patz

Do you ever wish your success would just come faster and easier?  This is common with most entrepreneurs.  We all want everything we do to be a huge hit right from the start, right?

Have you ever had spring flowers pop up out the ground early only to be killed by a cold snap which hits at that same time?  At first, the flower pops up because of some warmth in the air and some abundant resources at the surface surrounding the seed help it sprout. Unfortunately, the flower is just starting out and has yet to strengthen to be able to face the challenges which happen in nature every day.  When the cold snap hits, the new flower is too tender to weather the challenge.

This is the same as having great success right out of the gate with a business idea.  Everything goes perfect and it seems like this business is and will only be a huge success.  Then all of the sudden, a couple of challenges hit and devastate the business.  Why do a couple of challenges take out such a great business?

The answer to that is much the same as the flower which dies right after a cold snap.  The business only experienced the good times.  Its roots ran shallow since everything it needed was there at the surface.  When a business experiences a slower growth because resources have to be found to make it grow strong, it grows deeper, hardier roots.  These roots help it weather droughts, storms, and cold snaps.

Take the time to find the resources you need to sustain your business, especially focusing on this during the good times.  As you know, every business will run into storms along the way.  Make sure to grow your roots deep and wide pulling in as many resources as you can to build a strong plant.  This wise growth strategy will have you reaching further and further into the sky as time goes on and allow you to continue growing through any challenge which pops up.

“There are no environments where you’re only going to win, because life just isn’t like that.” – Bobby Orr

Do you take risks?  What I mean by this is do you make decisions to move forward and take action even when the outcome of those actions is unknown?  To achieve any success in our life, you will want to make these types of hard decisions.

Being able to move forward when the certainty of the result is unknown is one quality of a true leader and is part of the entrepreneur’s required skill set.  Being able to take action even when you know failure is a possibility is what separates the hugely successful from those who live a safe, comfortable life.

I often hear students looking to play it safe.  They want all the answers before taking a step.  They want to know the decision they make will work out before they invest their time and money.  Wanting this kind of safety hurts the size of the reward.  As you already know, life rewards those who are willing to take risks and those who move forward even when the result is an unknown.

Think of those who invest in a company when it’s brand new and unproven.  They are the investors who make the largest returns.  The investors who come along after the company has proven itself successful may still make money and the returns are much  lower.  You see the relationship here?  The size of the reward goes down as the size of the risk decreases.

This leaves you with a decision to make.  If you want a huge reward, you must learn to accept and take large risks.  If you want a smaller, safe reward, then you can take smaller risks.

If huge success were easy, everyone would do it.  Being successful in both life and your business takes the willingness to make the tough decision when others pause.  Taking these risks is all part of the game of living your dream life.  Each time you take a risk, there is a reward for taking it… and oftentimes, the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.  Are you ready to take more and larger risks?

“Many people succeed when others do not believe in them. But rarely does a person succeed when he does not believe in himself.” – Herb True

Do you believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your principle targets?  As with everything in life, your thoughts are the incubator of your results.

Have you ever seen crabs in a tank or a bucket without a lid on it?  Did you wonder why they didn’t put one on there since they could easily climb out?  It’s because the lower crabs keep reaching up and pulling down the top crab who is attempting to escape.

You are the top crab looking to get out of the bucket.  All the naysayers in your life are the rest of the crabs attempting to grab you with their claws and pull you back into the bucket with them.  You have to believe you will escape the bucket or the other crabs will continue to hold you down.

For you to achieve any goal, you must first believe you can just like the top crab. This belief is key because you will undoubtedly have people who tell you what you are doing will never succeed.  To be able to use this as fuel to motivate you for the journey, you will want to believe in yourself.  If there is doubt in your head or heart, this kind of negative feedback from others can be devastating.  Essentially the other person is looking to program you to fail… or even worse, to quit.

When you have a big vision and a huge why to accomplish it, make sure your belief is  strong.  Surround yourself with others who will support you instead of drag you back into the bucket.  Have you ever noticed the truly successful people in life encourage others to pursue their dreams?  They get it.  They know you must believe to achieve.

Remember, every successful person has this one trait in common – an unending and devout belief they will succeed with any goal they have.  Follow their lead and start believing in yourself and your goals.  It is the keystone to build your success!

The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.” – Benjamin Disraeli

Do you know when your opportunity is going to show up?  For most people, the answer is of course not.  Since you have no idea when an opportunity is going to reveal itself, how can you be ready for it?

This is one of the areas athletes and performers are great at because they put in so much work ahead of time – most of which is never seen.  They practice and practice.  They do after action reviews by looking at game film or reviewing practice sessions.  They break down all the things which were done correctly.  They look for all the ways what they are doing could be better.  They go back out and practice while implementing the changes they wanted to make to improve.

When their opportunity comes in their sporting event or their performance, they are ready.  They have practiced their skills and actions so often, they happen automatically.  They have become unconsciously competent in their chosen area of expertise.  They hit the big shot with time winding down or give a memorable performance which others are talking about for years to come.

Their key was the preparation – all they did when no one else was watching to be able to excel when the opportunity came up.

What have you done in your business and life to be ready when your opportunity shows up?  What could you do more of or a better job of to ensure you succeed when your opportunity arrives?

Here are some questions to begin stepping your game up to be ready when the next opportunity does knock:

  • What is going on in your industry today?
  • Do you know what your prospective clients want and why your prospective clients will be searching for you?
  • Do you know what your product or service does better than anybody else?
  • Do you know where your competitor’s are weak where you are strong?
  • Do you stay on top of the latest trends in your industry and focus on how to stay in front of them?
  • Do you study the sales process?
  • What new ways are you able to reach prospects?
  • Which ways do they want to be reached?
  • What can you do more of or better to position yourself better?
  • What networking functions are important to attend for your visibility and success?
  • Would publishing a book in your area of expertise help your positioning?
  • What joint ventures could you do to create more for yourself and the other company?

Answering these questions are just some of the many ways to prepare yourself for your next opportunity.  Brainstorm a list of what else you can do now to be ready to capitalize on your next opportunity.  Then create the action steps to consistently implement these new ideas into your life today.  When you prepare like a champion, you will succeed when your opportunity arises.
